Wine Advocate 87 points - The Assyrtiko Wild Ferment is listed at 13% this year. It is always a complicated wine to make. Because of that, no doubt, the price has spiked up, and it is notably more expensive than the winery’s Thalassitis, which I usually like better. The wine is pretty good, though, if you like the style, which is always going to be governed by the wood conversation - the unique medley of barrels used. Aged in a typical blend of tank (50%), Acacia (20%), French oak (20%) and American Oak (10%), this, in stark contrast to the winery’s Thalassitis also reviewed this issue, opens surprisingly approachable. The nose smells of wood and what I took to be some reductive nuances, but the palate is more interesting. It has caressing texture, a tightly wound demeanor and considerable intensity on the finish, showing some of that same acidic burst that I found in the Thalassitis this issue. The structure and tension on the finish are quite impressive, actually, making me want to like it a lot more. Brooding and rather dark at the moment, its acidity manages to cut through the wood, making it quite powerful as it lands on the palate. The nose is less inviting, though, even a couple of days later and after aeration. That may yet improve, but let’s be a bit conservative at the moment. It is quite young and it may yet come together. Drink now-2018. (Feb 2014)
