This is a complex, structured Sauvignon Blanc that shows delicate notes of citrus, stone fruit, limes and spice all wrapped around a strong backbone of minerality.
Wine Advocate 92 points - The 2011 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve is blended with 10% Semillon and is whole bunch pressed. It has an attractive bouquet with nectarine, grapefruit and hints of mandarin that emerge with aeration (incidentally, a second bottle displayed a heightened mineral component that lent it a real Loire-like freshness and vitality.) The palate is well-balanced with a fine citric thread and a lovely lemongrass-tinged phenolic finish. This is an intriguing, pleasurable Sauvignon Blanc from winemaker Duncan Savage. Drink now-2016. (Oct 2013)

Cape Point Vineyards is located in the southernmost tip of South Africa on a peninsula where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. Founded in 1996 by South African investment banker Sybrand van der Spuy, the first vintage of Cape Point was 2000; their winemaker Duncan Savage joined the company in 2002. The Cape Point wine district was established a mere two years after the winery; its boundaries extend along the western edge of False Bay and Cape Point Vineyards is the sole winery in the region. Growing conditions in the area are influenced by the presence of two oceans ‒ the Cape peninsula is only seven miles at its widest point ‒ and also by the mountain range nearby. Cape Points estate parcels are planted to take full advantage of these two terroirs: Noordhoek was planted on the cooler, south facing slopes of decomposed granite and sandstone and the Scarborough parcel on warmer, north facing slopes. Only hand-picked estate fruit from the propertys 82 acres are used for Cape Point wines. Inspired by the great Old World Sauvignon Blancs, such as those by the late Didier Dagueneau, Duncan seeks to create new benchmarks for South African Sauvignon Blanc. In the cellar are stainless steel tanks, neutral French 600L oak barrels and custom-made 300L and 600L amphora. He ages his wines sur lie in tank and barrel and since 2008, all Cape Point wines have included a proportion of base wine that has fermented and/or aged in amphora. Duncan is also one of the youngest members of the Cape Winemakers Guild. Over the last 30 years, the Guild has come to represent the pinnacle of South African winemakers; one must be nominated for consideration by ones peers and membership is by invitation only. By experimenting with fermentation and blending, Duncan produces complex and textured expressions of Sauvignon Blanc that highlight aromas of grapefruit, citrus and stone fruits, rather than the ubiquitous gooseberry and elderflower. The results have been recognized by some of the leading critics in the world, including Wine Spectator, Decanter and South Africas Eben Sadie, who has been quoted as saying that Cape Point is his countrys finest Sauvignon.
Wine maker notes
The Cape Point Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Reserve is a full wine with great levels of complexity. The grapes for this wine are selected on the vines of 3 distinct vineyard parcels on Cape Point Vineyards’ Noordhoek Estate. Additional levels of interest are added in the final blend by including percentages of Semillon and barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc. Released 14 months after vintage, this wine will continue to develop and improve for many years. The nose shows delicate floral elements, grapefruit, stone-fruit and limes along with subtle wood spice, following through to a rich textured palate held together by an incredible mineral backbone. The wine shows great structure and will develop incredibly well over the next 10 years.

Technical notes
Sauvignon Blanc is blended with barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc and a little Semillon and aged for 14 months on its gross lees with regular battonage.

Producer
Cape Point Vineyards was established in 1996 by Sybrand van der Spuy, an investment banker by trade. Initially he settled in Noordhoek, on the Cape Peninsula, to start mining kaolin. However he quickly realized that this location would be ideal to grow vines. Sybrand purchased a property near the quarry and restored the old Dutch homestead. He also worked on replacing the invasive alien vegetation with indigenous fynbos and yellowwood trees. He then pursued his dream and planted vineyards overlooking the idyllic pearly white sand Noordhoek beach. In 1997 the first Sauvignon Blanc vineyard was finally planted against the mountain slope. The winery now has 30 ha under vines which are located on two estates; one in Noordhoek and the other one in Scarborough. Both estates benefit from their unique location on the Cape Peninsula at the confluence of the two oceans, namely the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. The Peninsula is a narrow strip of land, 7 Miles at its widest point where grapes enjoy slow-ripening conditions, ideal for producing premium wines. Cape Point Vineyards has identified two different types of terroirs each with its own specificities with regards to the soil and the climatic conditions. The Cape Peninsula is well known for its microclimates, mainly due to the ocean influences from both sides but also its mountain relief. On the cooler, South facing slopes of the Noordhoek estate, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Semillon were planted.
