This cool climate red pairs fresh and intense notes of spice and small game with ripe notes of dark cherries and blackberries. Backed by vibrant acidity and firm tannins this is approachable now but is suitable for cellaring for at least 10 years.
Wine Advocate 91 points - The maiden 2008 One Man Band comes from handpicked Syrah that forms around 80% of the blend, augmented by Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Mourvedre. Matured in 25% new oak for between 12 and 18 months, it is intended to represent the best of the estate. Almost inky in color, it is bridled with a pure, well-delineated floral bouquet with violet-tinged black cherry and blueberry fruit. The palate is nicely balanced with succulent rounded tannins counterpoised by a fine thread of acidity. Despite a couple of years in bottle it is still surprisingly backward and probably merits another couple of years in the cellar. Excellent. Drink 2015-2023. (Oct 2013)
Located in Elgin, South Africa, Andrew Gunn and family acquired this beautiful, but run-down apple farm in 1997. A first generation South African, Andrew can trace his ancestry back to the Vikings, hence the long boat emblem on the labels. The vineyards of Iona are located on a mountain plateau in the coolest region of South Africa, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Sauvignon Blanc is the main focus, accounting for nearly 65% of Iona’s plantings, along with Syrah, Mourvedre, Viognier and Bordeaux varietals. Winemaker John Seccombe produces clear, focused wines with a sense of place, while bringing a fresh outlook on Iona’s unusual vineyard sites.
|Estate Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Mourvedre and a touch of Viognier, was blended to produce a sleek and sophisticated wine that highlights the best of the red wines Iona produces. The grapes were hand-picked, destemmed and sorted again on a vibrating table. Vinification is traditional – extraction was achieved via regular pumpovers followed by punch downs of the cap. The wine completed its malolactic in tank, aged for 12-18 months in French oak barrels (25% new) and was racked 2-3 times before bottling.
|The wines of Iona come from a dramatically unique site in the Cape Winelands.
The vineyards are on a mountain plateau 420 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
In a country where cool sites are precious, these vineyards are like gold — the grapes ripening up to two months later than other Cape vineyards and in perfect balance. Iona is South Africa’s coolest vineyard site.
Andrew Gunn and family acquired this beautiful, but run-down apple farm in 1997. It was renamed ”IONA” after the remote, spiritual island off the west coast of Scotland. We Gunns can trace our ancestry to the Vikings that landed in Scotland in the 900s, hence the Viking longboat emblem on our labels.
