Buy Ponzi Vineyards Chardonnay Avellana
Wine Advocate 88 points - Representing a first-time bottling (of only some hundred 6-packs), the Ponzi 2010 Chardonnay Avellana suggests freshly-milled grains along with candied lemon rind and apple, displaying what I call the ?memory of malic acid? even though chemically speaking it was all converted to lactic. This also betrays the relatively newness of its barrels in a resinous streak. The upshot is harder in feel and in no way as alluring as the corresponding 2009 Reserve (which very small single-vineyard bottlings like this one may now supplant). But there is a sappy sense of refreshing primary juiciness to this Avellana bottling as well as a satisfying, subtly saline and meaty savor that helps knit its elements together in a finish managing to encourage the next sip. It will be interesting to see how this evolves over the next several years. (Aug 2012)

Founded in 1970 by Dick and Nancy Ponzi, Ponzi Vineyards has set the standard for viticultural innovation and winemaking excellence in Oregon. From the start, the family has practiced sustainable agriculture and its four estate vineyards – Abetina, Madrona, Aurora and Avellana are LIVE Certified Sustainable. In 1988, Robert Parker named Dick Ponzi as one of the finest winemakers in the world; only three other Americans have been so recognized. In 1994 Dick’s daughter Luisa took over primary winemaking responsibilities. Luisa apprenticed with Christophe Roumier of Domaine Roumier in Burgundy, France as well as with Luca Currado of Vietti in Piedmont, Italy. “There is a reputation behind our label that I want people to know they can count on.” ~ Winemaker Luisa Ponzi
Wine maker notes
This opulent wine shows a spicy nose of poached pear, vanilla bean, hibiscus and passionfruit leading to a generous mouth lush with yellow plum, guava, lemon and nutmeg. The finish is light with ample acidity to keep this fruit-focused wine fresh and bright.

Producer
Founded more than 30 years ago in Oregon's lush Willamette Valley, Ponzi Vineyards is internationally acclaimed for producing some of the world's finest Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and White Riesling.

For more than three decades, wine pioneers Dick and Nancy Ponzi have set the standard for Oregon's viticultural innovation while maintaining an unwavering commitment to a tradition of winemaking excellence. Today, this philosophy is carried on by the Ponzi Family's second generation: Winemaker Luisa Ponzi, Sales/Marketing Director Maria Ponzi Fogelstrom and Operations Manager Michel Ponzi.

The Ponzi Family's 100 acres of family-owned vineyards in the Northern Willamette Valley are LIVE Certified, the world's highest standard for sustainable viticulture. Ponzi Vineyards continues to hold long-term contracts with many of the best growers in the region.

Driven by the concept that the variety must match the terroir and climate, Ponzi Vineyards continues to set the standard for Oregon and remains at the forefront of the nation's top wine producers.
