Bodegas Mairena is as much about wine as it is about family. Gabriel and Monica Blanco come from a long line of Spanish grape growers – their five children are now involved in the winery and Mairena’s two oenologists, Rudolfo and Ricardo Menissi, are brothers. Founded in the 1980’s, Mairena is located near the city of Ugarteche in Lujan de Cuyo, a highly regarded grape growing region. The family released their inaugural vintage in 2005. The terroir of the estate – high elevation and sandy loam soils provides an ideal growing environment for Bonarda, Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc. Given the family’s background, proper viticulture is a priority. That same level of attention to detail extends to the cellar. Grapes are carefully sorted, handpicked and destemmed. Fermentation occurs in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.
