Wine Advocate 93 points - The 2010 Pietradonice is beautiful in this vintage. A wine more of Montalcino than a true expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2010 is delineated and vibrant from start to finish. Savory herbs lead to black plums, tobacco, mocha and crushed rocks on the firm, vibrant finish. I am not a huge fan of international varieties in Montalcino, but there is no question the Pietradonice is endowed with tons of vintage character, and 2010 is a superb vintage for this part of Tuscany in particular. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. (Jun 2013)

Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri. Located in Montalcino, Italy, the estate has produced exceptional Brunellos since its debut vintage in 1978. The estate is currently run by Giovanni’s son Giacomo, a humble vintner who perpetually searches for ways to improve his wines. Giacomo’s hard work and commitment to the Neri legacy has been duly recognized - in 2006, his Tenuta Nuova was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator and his 2001 Brunello Cerretalto was awarded 100 points. The 120 acre estate is divided into four sites - Pietradonice in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Cetine in Sant’Angelo in Colle, Cerretalto a natural amphitheatre located near the Asso River and Fiesole, the oldest vineyard situated northeast of Montalcino. Giacomo produces three categories of Brunello: the vineyard blend White Label and two single vineyard wines, Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto. All the fruit is hand-picked and the wines age for at least 24 months in oak barrels of varying sizes before release. Casanova di Neri Brunellos are elegant wines that manage to balance wonderful raciness along with great concentration and structure. Each one exhibits Tuscan typicity, crafted in a modern style.
Wine maker notes
A wine born from our cabernet sauvignon in the vineyards south of Montalcino where a combination of careful farming practices, the right ratio of vines, the unique microclimate and soil components have resulted in a wine of exceptional analytical values. It stands as an interpretation of this variety in Montalcino, the fruit of a vineyard project eager to confront itself with an ”international” grape variety. A profound red wine, with a complex, a superb aromatic chiaroscuro the uniqueness of the territory in its richness of flavours, its fulsome tannins perfectly melded in the smooth persistent length of its taste. Particularly elegant and with great fineness, it is the fruit of a high- level vintage that led to the harvest of grapes with the perfect level of ripeness.

Casanova di Neri was established in 1971 when Giovanni Neri acquired a large estate within Montalcino. In 1991, his son Giacomo took over direction of the estate and winemaking. His 138 acres are divided into four distinct areas: Pietradonice in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, Cetine in Sant'Angelo in Colle, Cerretalto and Fiesole. . The Fiesole is the oldest vineyard due northeast of Montalcino at 862 feet. In 1986, Cerretalto was acquired – a natural amphitheatre near the Asso River at an elevation between 617 and 741 feet. The vineyard’s position to the east of Montalcino and unique terroir justify its own bottling. On the opposite side of Montalcino to the southeast, near Castelnuovo dell'Abate we find the Pietradonice vineyard, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. The 61 acre Cetine vineyard, faces south-southeast on a hillside near Sant'Angelo in Colle. Soil, vineyard position, microclimate, choice of clones, grafting and well-organized vineyards all combine to produce exceptional grapes. As the quality of fruit from vineyards has improved, more care and attention have also been given in the winery – from vinification, to the careful selection and use of casks of different sizes, made from different types of oak – always with the maximum respect for tradition. The winery’s Brunello production is divided between three different labels in order to best represent the estate’s unique characteristics – White Label, Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto. Giacomo Neri and consultant Carlo Ferrini are constantly looking for ways to improve their vineyards and winemaking. Their wines are fine expressions of terroir with good structure and soft oak.
