Wine Advocate 90 points - Reflecting roughly equal parts Ottonel and true, petit grains Muscat Alsace, Hugel’s 2010 Muscat d’Alsace Tradition - like its 2008 counterpart - manages to be coolly refreshing as well as invigoratingly piquant and mouth-wateringly saline. What’s more, a silken feel complements the influence of mint, oregano and coriander, with apricot kernel and orange zest serving for counterpoint in the wine’s generously juicy, long, cucumber and fresh orange-informed finish. Expect versatile performances at table not to mention outstanding value through at least 2020. “We have decided only to bottle Muscat in years when it’s really good,” explains Marc Hugel, “which means years that are cool, late, and preserve acidity while fully ripening. Lately, we’ve been alternating late vintages with warm, early ones so it works out to about half the time. I wouldn’t say that the 2011 fruit was bad, but we blended it all into the Gentil.” In an act of faith in this genre, and encouraged by the fact that in Marc Hugel’s words, “some of the greatest wines in our cellar from the ‘40s and ‘50s are Muscats from the Schoenenbourg” the family has planted some in that site. The first small crop, in 2012, was decimated by boar, but there will probably be a vineyard-designated 2013. “And can you believe this”?” Hugel adds. “The wild pigs perform a triage! They ate the Ottonel first and then came back for the Muscat d’Alsace! They’re not stupid.” (Aug 2014)
