BOTTLE The colour is a very strong gold. In the glass, the bead is fine and persistent. The nose is impressive for its intensity and great richness. From the first moments, the complexity and concentration are apparent. Fruity aromas predominate, on two different levels: on the one hand, one detects candied, almost cooked fruits (quince) and fragrances of citrus fruit (bergamot); on the other hand, airing reveals vanilla notes of rare elegance, and also some mineral nuances. Some lightly toasted aromas (toasted brioche) complete the overall effect. On the palate, the very clean attack quickly gives place to structure and concentration. This vinosity is perfectly set off by a superb dynamism. Aromas of liqueur and candied citrus fruit give the wine a lovely freshness. The finish is ample and very long. Already remarkably open, it can be served with richly flavoured shellfish dishes (lobster, squid, etc.), fish or white meat (fattened chicken, for example). However, with its considerable ageing potential, the 1990 Vintage will continue to age well for many years (10 years). MAGNUM The colour is a very strong gold. In the glass, the bead is fine and persistent. The nose presents complex aromas of rare delicacy. This complexity is due mainly to a duality between the freshness of the fruits (citrus fruit, pear and apricot), and the maturity of great wines which have slowly (magnum oblige) reached a considerable age (honey, caramel). On the palate, the clean attack and the persistent liveliness are even more apparent in the magnum than in the bottle. The finish is ample, structured and very long. Already remarkably open, it can be served with richly flavoured shellfish dishes (lobster, squid, etc.), fish or white meat (fattened chicken, for example). However, with its considerable ageing potential, the 1990 Vintage will continue to age well for more than 15 years. JEROBOAM The colour is golden with some green highlights. In the glass, the bead is fine and persistent. Initially the nose is very fresh, both fruity (pear and apricot) and mineral. On shaking, more developed aromas of dried fruits and nuts (almonds and hazelnuts, for example) take over. On the palate, right from the attack, this wine presents a fine complexity, and a pleasant freshness. Later on, it shows power and smoothness. On the middle palate there are stone fruits (white peach). The well-balanced finish reveals a wine of great finesse. Already remarkably open, it can be served with richly flavoured shellfish dishes (lobster, squid, etc.), fish or white meat (fattened chicken, for example). However, with its considerable ageing potential, the 1990 Vintage will continue to age well for more than 20 years.
Wine Spectator 94 points - Rich flavors and aromas of bread pudding and molasses mix with hints of baked peach, biscuit, ground ginger, fleur de sel and candied orange zest. Elegant, this shows lovely balance, a subtle bead and a delicate yet persistent freshness. Disgorged October 2008. Drink now through 2020.—A.N. (Oct 10 2012)

Wine maker notes
For climate, it is with 1989 that 1990 shows the most similarities. After a mild wet winter, the buds opened almost one month early. This exposed the vineyard to spring frosts which occurred in two waves (on April 5th and April 19th) and affected nearly 12,000 hectares of vines. Flowering took place in the first half of June, in cool weather, which caused some fruit not to set and led to some millerandage in later sectors. Summer really set in during July. Although temperatures and rainfall were normal, the sunshine was exceptional. With almost 2,100 hours of sunshine, it broke the record of the last 30 years! As harvesting time approached, the degrees increased quickly whereas the acidities were maintained at a good level. Picking began in the second week of September for the Chardonnay, and a week later for the Pinot noir and the Pinot meunier. The balance of the musts is remarkable, with an average alcohol content above 10°5GL and an acidity of 8 g/l. Apart from a few of the Chardonnay vines affected by botrytis, the quality of the three varieties is superb and very consistent.

Technical notes
The 1990 Vintage Reserve is a blend of 17 different Crus, all classified as Grands and Premiers Crus. Black grapes make up two thirds of the blend: 56% Pinot noir, from the Montagne de Reims and the Grande Vallée de la Marne, and 11% Pinot meunier, from the Premiers Crus in the west of the Montagne de Reims. The blend is completed with 33% Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs and, to a lesser extent, from the Montagne de Reims.

Producer
Each Cuvee is true to the Veuve Clicquot style and spirit, faithfully maintained from the time when Madame Clicquot was running the House under the motto, ”Only one quality, the finest”. Created with a majority of Pinot Noir in the blend, the Veuve Clicquot Champagne style is noted for a firm structure, full-bodied texture and rich aromas.
