Sitar Wines is an artistic collaboration conceived by vintner Dr. Madaiah Revana which brings together the craft of the winemaker and the artist under the unifying concept of music.
Dr. Revana is known for creating the highly successful Napa Valley vineyard and winery, Revana Family Vineyard as well as the more recently heralded Alexana Winery of Oregon. While pondering his newest project, Dr. Revana determined that he wanted to combine elements of his Indian heritage with an exclusive, limited production Pinot Noir.
He found the sitar, an intricate and challenging instrument, whose 23 strings require constant fine-tuning and maintenance, to be the perfect metaphor for the production of great Pinot Noir as well as an ideal link to his past. Seeking to further embrace the concept of artistry in wine, he asked his friend and renowned artist Thomas Arvid to create an original piece of artwork to become the wine’s label. At the same time, Dr. Revana contacted another friend, the highly respected winemaker Tony Rynders to craft the Sitar Pinot Noir.
The trio has composed an entirely unique wine – Sitar Pinot Noir. Made from select vineyard sites across Oregon’s Willamette Valley, packaged in a striking bottle and adorned with Thomas Arivd’s original charcoal sketch.
Sitar Pinot Noir is a five vintage series that will showcase the transformation of Arvid’s original “Sitar” masterpiece; each unique vintage label will reveal a stage in Arvid’s artistic process from charcoal to completed oil painting on the 2012 vintage.
The intricacy, challenge and beauty of the Sitar are akin to the subtle and enigmatic qualities of great Pinot Noir and great art.
Producer
Dr. Madaiah Revana balances a successful practice as a cardiologist in Houston, Texas with his devotion to his world-class portfolio of wineries. His love for both wine and the rich tradition and culture of winemaking led him first to develop his eponymous estate Cabernet property in Napa Valley, then Alexana Winery in Oregon’s Dundee Hills and now Sitar Wines.
Madaiah grew up in rural India near the city of Bangalore were his family has been farming for generations. His interest in becoming a winegrower was led by a love of wine, but the instinct for grape growing is part of his family farming heritage. First introduced to fine wine by friends in the United States, he quickly became fascinated with Bordeaux’s first growths. That fascination led to the Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines of Napa Valley and then to Burgundy and the Pinot Noirs of Oregon.
