A hue of brilliant platinum beckons from the glass, followed by the scent of Chardonnay flowers in full bloom. Exuberant acidity awakens the palate suggesting refreshing citrus elements of lemon and lime zest. The core of this wine consists of a complex minerality marked by an essence of wet stone tempered with notes of pear.
| Wine maker notes |
| We have three different vineyard blocks of Chardonnay: Blocks 5, 6 and 7. All blocks and clones are picked, fermented and aged separately. Block 5, planted to clone 4 in 1989, is the oldest vineyard on the ranch. Block 5 provides structure, ample acidity along with the ripe apple and pear flavors. Block 6 was planted in 1998 to the Wente clone. The Wente clone is known for its floral, aromatic qualities. Block 7 is planted to three different clones: Wente, Robert Young and clone 15. The Robert Young clone makes rich, broad textured wines. Clone 15 did not make the cut for the blend this year. After hand harvesting during the cool of the morning, the fruit is whole cluster pressed. The wine is fermented in small French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. A variety of native and commercial yeasts were used for greater complexity in the blend. The barrels are stirred regularly to promote malolactic fermentation. The wine spent 10 months in barrel before being blended and bottled. No filtration was performed. |
