The Cape eagle owl (one of the world’s largest and most powerful owls) served as inspiration for this utterly charming Chardonnay. Unfortunately each year many of these regal birds are killed by vehicles as they hunt from roadside roosts. We are trying to combat this by providing special perches in our vineyards, while the owls help to keep rodent numbers down.
Our limestone rich Robertson soils nourish the vineyards where we source our fruit from, while exciting new Chardonnay clones add even more depth of flavour and structure. The grapes underwent 100% whole bunch handling to ensure elegance and finesse. After undergoing fermentation in both barrel and tank this wine was left on the light lees in the barrel for a total of 11 months with weekly batonnage for the first three months after fermentation. On the nose you’ll savour aromas of zesty citrus fruit, lemon curd and a hint of crushed oyster shell, while the palate delights with fresh lemons, limes and grapefruit. The finish sports a chalky minerality complemented by elegant, creamy tones.
Absolutely superb when served with rich seafood dishes, grilled calamari and citrus chicken salad.
